Hell’s mouth was created out of a life long fascination with the history, languages, religions and inhabitants of the British isles over multiple millennia. This fascination lead me down a rabbit hole tracking down the often elusive and widely scattered hints of a history that is much more fascinating than it is ever given credit for. The language itself has kept a record of the various peoples who have lived, loved, fought and died on these islands , from the Celtic tribes, Roman Empire, Saxon conquers, Viking invaders, and more laterly the Norman conquest. Ultimately this sent me down another, deeper rabbit hole of setting out to learn the various languages of the British isles, and their conquerors. Hell’s mouth offers translation into Modern Cornish, Welsh, Irish Gaelic, Scottish Gaelic, Norwegian, Danish, Dutch , French and Latin. Breton, old English, older and younger fultharc are also available but may take some time to translate!
Our location in far west Cornwall has a deep connection to our Celtic past, and whilst the land has seen trade routes rise and fall, battles fought and kingdoms change, there is still a deep sense of otherness; something that is uniquely Cornish and somewhat mystical, yet is difficult to define.
I believe that many people come to Cornwall to connect with the land and its history, to feel a deep sense of belonging, and to find their own identity in the craziness of our modern age.
Here at Hell’s Mouth, we aim to work with you to create something entirely unique, so that you can wear and enjoy it for a lifetime. We take inspiration from not only all things Cornwall, but all things Celtic, from the ogham inscriptions, Celtic knot, Arthurian mythology ,the history , to the decor in local churches and monuments. We encourage you to incorporate Celtic languages into your tattoo, to make it truly a one off, our motto is; think different, be different.
